The Trike We Saw At MAD: The Vision Of A Five YO At “Out of Hand,” The 3DP Show At The Museum of Art & Design

If You Want to Understand The Impact of 3D Printing & Digital Fabrication on The Future, Try Seeing Curated 3DP Artifacts as Envisioned by a Five-Year-Old…

I took my Just-Turned-Five grandson Grey to the Museum of Art & Design (or, better, MAD) in New York City last Friday evening. We went to see “Out of Hand,” MAD’s three floors of 3DP and DigiFab art—subtitled: “Materializing the Postdigital.” YOWZA!

Let me just say that regardless of your techie inclinations or art predilections or human curiosity—if you’re in New York—SEE this show. It’s revelatory…!

Grey’s favorite “print” was the black, prone-rider, human-mandible-inspired, battery-powered electric drill driven: TRICYCLE. Dubbed by its German design team: “Rapid Racer.” Left and just above is HIS pic…using my iPhone…he insisted!

This vehicle would probably best be ridden by someone the size of a 5 YO! For scale, note the red/green/silver body housing of the portable electric-drill.

This entire “vehicle” was printed in one, single, complete piece. Weighing in at 25 pounds and all 3D Printed ABS (save for tires, chain, some fasteners, etc.)

My GSon also decided to capture the description cards for every displayed work (many) he photographed (below)…something I had NOT even thought about until he nonchalantly fired away (note the soft-focus from his insouciant shake)…

Thanks to Grey’s “eye” and good work, I’m making this short blog post from our experience together—and his photography. Our next generations seem to deliver improvements on mine…thank Goodness…

More About 3DP Media’s i3E+ngines: NY3DP NetWeek Profiled, Positioned & Presented Provocatively

Last Post, I Rolled-Out “i3E” (Or, What Revolutionary 3DP/DigiFab Can Do To Empower Our Communities!); In This Post, I’ll Tell You About One Of The Drivers Of i3E: Our “NY3DP NetWeek”—A Debut Event Designed To Build On Our September “NY3DP Summits” Momentum Around The Tandem & Tech-Driven Betterment Of City & State. (Part #2)

First, some background on how we evolved the concept and shape of NY3DP NetWeek…this quick review informs the process and how NetWeek came to be…

We created September’s NY3DP Summits to study the impact of 3DP/Digital Fabrication technological disruption—and opportunities!—on our New York-wide commerce and common-good. We succeeded!

NYC3DP’s tagline is “Building Community Via 3D Printing!” We’re seeking to build a “big tent” to welcome-in EVERYone across a very-varied spectrum of interests and intents and ideologies. The Goal: the betterment of tech-empowered and humanity-centered community (at whatever scale) life in New York City and State.

So, first, (1) we gathered four different Roundtables peopled (geniused!) by a total of 30 topic experts, thought leaders and “techreatives.” (E.g., Brooklyn-ish, gadfly-esque, change-making “enterprisers”—with or without business portfolio—but grounded in the DigiNew and its riotous ramifications…)

Then, (2) we asked these diverse Roundtablers to exchange and expand and exult on the opportunities they saw 3DP engining in key segments of hyperlocal, civic-community and/or statewide common-good. (Like Inspiration, Education, Entrepreneurship and Economic development: Voila! i3E again…)

Finally, (3) we recorded it all in mindmaps and videos. So, all that synergistic brain work and creative thinking would be available for your use…

I’ve intentional kept the Summits‘ Event-Homepage up on this site (you can also find it under “Events” in the Main Nav Bar). It’s full of information about our Summits‘ agenda, the seminal ideas at issue and the people we recruited (dragooned?!) to engage them.  and the captured proceeds—via commentary and full-session videos.

We succeeded—in our first-time effort—to impanel the appropriately knowledgeable, segment-focused and creatively inclined. Our empowered Roundtables successfully began the investigations of  3DP vis a vis important social and commercial sectors to City and State.

Right now, you can link to the commentary and video proceeds of our Roundtables on 3DP and Economic Development (“Printing Up Jobs In Your Nabes…“), Re-Industrialization (“New Industrial Revolution…“) and Education (“3DP & Kids…“).

[If you’re reading this post and see this interjection, you’ll want to return later today to see the rest of my commentary on NY3DP NetWeek here.]

3DP Media Intros CoAligned & Coupled “i3E+ngines”: NY3DP NetWeek & 3DP(in a)Can

We Roll-Out (A) The Complete & Compelling Meaning Of “i3E”; (B) “NY3DP NetWeek”—A New Event To Build On Our September “NY3DP Summits” Momentum; AND (C) “3DP(in a)Can”—An Innovative Mode To Educate The Underserved, Hyperlocally—Wherever Their Neighborhood May Be Geographically! (Part #1)

My regular readers (all three or four of you)—from the patent evidence of the title and subtitle convoluted above—may start mumbling yet again about my propensity for acronyms, neologisms and bizarre uses of written English. Suck it up, Friends: here we go again…

So: i3E

Recall (if you can!) what we’re trying to accomplish at 3DP Media in our revolutionary world of 3D Printing and Digital Fabrication. In this new, new space, we’re a media house, think tank and event producer. All of these are knowledge platforms. And—for these platforms to be really useful to the largest number of interested people and organizations—we have to market and promote them as widely as possible.

In this digital media-driven discipline of exposure, connection and relationship-building, what works best for the successful insemination of new concepts? Usually the short, novel, slightly mysterious, acronymic, provocative, easy to say, compelling, rhythmic/rhymey, memorable and visually pleasing. Yep: “i3E“—our newest neologism. (OK: literally, “new word,” which may in fact be a new word to you…)

OK: we tried to encapsulate all these DigiMedia admonitions in a our education/promotion tool. Voila: i3E! Now, we could have a shot at success in this buzzy, oversaturated, chaotic universe of competing interests—O, the signal-to-noise ratio!—maybe!

To start—and maybe to finish, at least here for now—what does i3E mean? Wait for it…Inspiration, Education, Entrepreneurship & Economic Development!

Yes, you know (some of you!) we just (September 23 through 27) ran an entire, week-long, 3DP/DigiFab event—NY3DP Summits—around this set of drivers.

And, to make it even better, we’ve hooked this idiom to our favorite mantra/equation—3DP=Jobs—and made a new formula! Here it is: 3DP->i3E.

3DP is inspiring educators, startup founders and economic development organizations (EDOs) to deploy 3DP and Digital Fabrication for their constituencies and communities.

(See what our NY3DP Summits topic experts and thought leaders have to say at our September Roundtables—video-captured and viewable via our Vlog links in the next paragraph below—about 3DP->i3E opportunities.)

Using 3DP/DigiFab systems, educators (“3DP & Kids“) are teaching both children and adults about STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math). Entrepreneurs are employing these (“New Industrial Revolution“) systems to create new startups and employ people. And, EDOs are helping their local commercial communities to learn about and use these (“Printing Up Jobs“) systems to build their existing enterprises.

And, that’s all just a start using our new formula-to-action: 3DP->i3E!

So, C’mon Back!
